IL MOSAICO DI GIOVANNI VII
Questo celeberrimo mosaico, fatto eseguire da Giovanni VII verso l’anno 706 e tolto dall’oratorio dell’antica Basilica di San Pietro, è uno dei tesori artistici più significativi della chiesa. Posto sopra l’altare della Sagrestia. Esso raffigura l’Epifania, si tratta di un frammento dei famosi mosaici giovannei, e mostra la Vergine seduta, con Gesù sulle ginocchia e uno dei Magi nell’atto di porgere un dono al Redentore. Il frammento è in una cornice in noce ed è ottimamente conservato.
JOHN VII’S MOSAIC John VII
had this very famous mosaic made and removed from the oratory of St. Peter’s Basilica. The mosaic is one of the most significant artistic treasures in the church. It is placed over the altar of the Sacristy, and it represents Epiphany. This is a fragment of the famous mosaics of John’s and it represents the Virgin sitting with Jesus on her knees and one of the Magi in the act of offering the Redeemer a gift. The fragment is preserved in a walnut frame and is perfectly well kept.
